Training Programme of IHSS includes short courses, Postgraduate programmes (PGD, MSc. and PhD); on themes of Human Settlements Development and Management, Environmental Planning and Management, and Land Development and Management.
The main objective of the Postgraduate Programme is to improve the competence of professionals in the field of human settlements and to impart them with new knowledge on housing and other related fields. It also aims to develop practical, managerial and analytical skills, as well as social and economic competence necessary to address the rising human settlement challenges. Ultimately the programme will support the sector so that it can meaningfully contribute towards realization of the aspirations of the National Development Goals and the Sustainable Development Agenda.

PGD Housing
Entry qualifications
To be eligible for admission to the postgraduate diploma course in housing, the candidate must have the following:
Advanced Diploma in Urban and Rural Planning or Architecture or Land Management and Valuation or Environmental Engineering or Building Economics or other degree in related fields from a recognized university or institution of higher learning;
Bachelor degree in relevant fields from a recognized University or Institution of higher learning;
Positive recommendations from two referees, at least one from the academic institution from where the candidate graduated and one from the practice; and
A working experience of at least two years in the relevant field will be an added advantage.
Candidates without sufficient background in human settlements related fields will be required to take additional courses offered in the undergraduate programmes in the relevant Schools at ARU.

Expected Learning Outcomes
At the end of the programme, students will have acquired knowledge, skills and competence, which will enable them to:
Re-orient their thinking in housing; from housing being a product to a process;
Identify key issues and problems pertaining to housing such as addressing key housing issues confronted by the poor that include access, house finance and environmental aspects;
Develop methods and tools for comprehending the aspects of appropriate technological approaches to conceptualising, designing, financing, implementing and maintaining housing;
Evolve context specific housing strategies required to support individual households to acquire decent housing and eventually bridge the housing gap;
Use information and communication technology tools (ICT) for housing, particularly human settlements projects and related studies; and
Write scientific reports and papers including housing related studies in both urban and rural areas.
MSc. Housing
To be eligible for admission to Masters of Science in Housing (MSc. Housing) at IHSS, the candidate must fulfill the following conditions:
A Bachelor degree with a minimum GPA of 2.7, or equivalent qualification as shall be approved by the University Senate, in the fields of urban planning; housing and infrastructure, urban development planning, architecture, urban geography, urban sociology, urban designers, environmental and civil engineering, geomatics, land management and valuation, building economics, construction economists and management, urban economics and other related fields;
Recommendation from at least two referees – one academician and one practicing professional; and
Work experience of 2 years in the respective fields is an added advantage.

Upon completion of the programme, students will have acquired knowledge, skills and competence, which will make them able to:

Develop, operate and apply information and communication technology tools (ICT) for housing related professional activities; of particularly concern here are the programmes such as Geographical Information System (GIS), Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Environmental Management Information Systems (EMIS);
Carry out housing research, generate knowledge and facilitate decision making and influence policy change; and
Support rural and urban inhabitants including those in unplanned settlements to improve their shelter.
MSc. Public Policy Analysis and Programme Management
Entry qualification
To be eligible for admission to Master of Science degree in Public Policy Analysis and Programme Management (MSc. PPA) at IHSS, the candidate must have:
Obtained a Bachelor degree with a minimum GPA of 2.7 or equivalent qualification as shall be approved by the University Senate, in the fields offered at ARU or any other related fields;
Work experience of 2 years in the policy related fields is an added advantage.
Expected Learning outcome
At the end of the programme, postgraduates of Public Policy Analysis and Programme Management will have acquired knowledge, skills and competence, which will make them ableto:
Analyse political science theory that are particularly relevant to understanding how public policies are formulated, especially rational actor models and pluralist approaches;
Apply economic approaches to public policy analysis, including market equilibrium, cost benefit analysis and the economic approach to questions of public provision and regulation;
Utilise the theory of regulation (from property rights to privatisation), and use a range of approaches available to address social problems, and reasons to apply one approach contrary to another in a particular situation;
Apply concepts of economic efficiency and equity as societal objectives and the relationship between them in modern public policy analysis and public management change, such as uncertainty, risk, justice and issues of life and death;
Determine the processes involved in policy preparation and implementation cycle including project planning, management, monitoring and evaluation; and
Analyse gender related issues in the preparation of development policies related to land and other natural resources; environment; public management; urban development and management; economic and fiscal aspects.
MA Development Studies
To be admitted into MA (DS) programme, an applicant is required to meet the following admission criteria:
A Bachelor degree with a minimum of lower second class in the fields offered at ARU and/or other related fields or equivalent qualification as shall be approved by the University Senate;
Candidates with unclassified under graduate degrees may be considered for admission provided she/he has a minimum of a B grade;
Work experience of 2 years in the community development related fields is an added advantage.
Duration:18months
Learning outcome
Upon completion of the programmes the students will be able to undertake and implement complex community development projects and make rational and informed decisions on development policies through application of the acquired critical thinking capacity, skills and competence.
PhD in Urban Governance and Environmental Studies (by coursework and dissertation)
Entry Requirements
The PhD by course work and dissertation targets candidates with Master’s degree in relevant fields of study. Entry qualifications will follow Ardhi University criteria as stipulated under the General Guidelines for Postgraduate Programmes. The requirements are as follows:
To be admitted to the Doctor of Philosophy Degree of Ardhi University, the candidate shall hold a Master’s Degree of Ardhi University or hold an equivalent standing Master’s Degree from a recognized University.
Duration:48 months
Upon successful completion of the PhD programme, candidates are expected to have acquired knowledge, skills and competence in the following areas:
Advanced knowledge to comprehend changing scientific paradigms and be able to question various schools of thoughts in his/her area of specialization;
Master the fundamentals of philosophical thinking and the logic of reasoning;
Be highly competent in carrying out applied/basic research as well as applying informed and objectively selected scientific principles and methods;
Apply appropriate analytic and presentation skills in research undertakings; and
Build capacity to analyse and address practical issues.
