The department of Environmental Engineering has its roots in public health engineering (PHE). The PHE course was offered from 1981 to 1989 by the Department of Public Health Engineering, which is the predecessor of the current Environmental Engineering Department. The department as well as the pertinent course came into being as a reaction by the Government of Tanzania against deteriorating urban infrastructure between 1973 and 1982. The poor urban infrastructure services were noted to endanger public health and this notion was attested by a major cholera epidemic in the 1970s. The profession was also a way of operationalizing the International Drinking Water Supply and Sanitation Decade (IDWSSD) of 1980 - 1990. The department offers two undergraduate programmes and four postgraduate programmes.

The training philosophy is also in line with the current thinking that focuses on moving away from the end-of-pipe treatment, to enhancing waste minimization and pollution prevention as well as sustainable environmental management and development.
Teaching is organized in themes. Each semester has a main theme and the subjects taught are related to that theme. In each semester except the eighth semester, students are required to do a project related to the theme. In the first three semesters, more time is devoted to theory, but as students proceed to succeeding semesters, the amount of time devoted to Fieldwork increases accordingly. The eighth semester is totally devoted to the final year dissertation
Description of the academic Programmes
BSc. Environmental Engineering (BSc.EE)
The graduates should be capable of self-employment as practitioners in any aspect of environmental engineering. They can provide services in training and research, water treatment and supply, environmental building services engineering, wastewater treatment and disposal, cleaner production and waste minimization, and air quality management. In addition, they can work in solid waste management with a focus on technology needs: environmental laboratory services, urban drainage, flood mitigation and irrigation, resource recovery and reuse, industrial hygiene, occupational health and safety, and engineering control of communicable diseases. They are also expected to serve alongside other professionals at various levels of responsibilities. Passes in FOUR approved subjects at C.S.E.E obtained prior to to sitting for the A.S.C.E.E; AND Principal level passes in at leat two of the following subjects; Physics, Advanced Mathematics, Chemistry or Biology. If the two Principal passes are not Mathematics and Physics, an applicant MUST have at least a Subsidiary pass in Physics and Advanced Mathematics/Basic Applied Mathematics.

Duration and Components of the Course
This four-year full-time course leads to the BSc. degree in Environmental Engineering. The course is structured on a semester system, with eight semesters. The curriculum is project oriented with emphasis on learning by doing. During each semester, 15 weeks are allocated for the theoretical learning, while 8 weeks are allocated for Industrial Training.
Expected learning outcome Be able to study the sanitation challenges facing communities in both urban and rural settings and subsequently be able to offer the viable solution in solving the sanitation problems, through offering a problem specific solutions in managing the safe and clean water provision, solid, liquid waste management and control of air emissions.
Be able to recognize and use course-specific theories, paradigms, concepts and principles; to analyze, synthesize and summarize information critically; iv. collect and integrate several lines of evidence, either to formulate and test hypothesis, or to use within other recognized research instruments.
BSc. Municipal and industrial services engineering (BSc.MISE)
Municipal and Industrial Services Engineering is a pioneering Programme that addresses urban’s societal engineering services’ needs. In this context Programme contents, philosophy and objectives are derived from municipal’s services infrastructure perspective.The graduates should be capable of self-employment as practitioners in any aspect of Municipal and Industrial Services Engineering. This course is needed to enable local governments through their municipal engineers to provide and maintain robust and integrated, balanced efficient municipal and industrial infrastructure services as stipulated in the Local government (Urban Authorities) Act of 1982 and its amendments. Such infrastructure services include street and trunk roads, street lights, water supply and sanitation works, solid waste infrastructures and services, storm water infrastructure, sewerage works and services, public toilets, market infrastructure as services, public parks, and slaughter houses etc. Additional municipal services include firefighting, electricity/energy and air pollution management. Industries of diverse nature are high density demand centres in municipalities for these services corresponding to provision of material flow networks of pathways/infrastructure for inputs and outputs to and from industries that need proper planning and engineering consideration. Municipal engineers have to be aware of and capable of designing, constructing, operating and maintaining in an integrated manner the general municipal infrastructures and those specific infrastructures to cater for industrial needs.

Research Infrastructure The department of Civil Engineering has a resource centre with reference research dissertation books from previous years and other relevant references rich in information crucial for the students.
MSc. Environmental technology and management (MSC.ETM)
The need for M.Sc. ETM was envisaged in the year 2007 following the establishment of the School of Environmental Science and Technology (SEST). The M.Sc. ETM was conceived as appropriate for the school as it is directly connected to the core theme of environments and its managerial aspects. It has also come to add value to Ardhi University's mission, vision and contribute towards its Corporate Strategic Plan.
The M.Sc. in Environmental Technology and Management (ETM) is revised based on the results of Tracer study which was carried out between January and July 2017. The tracer study led to the inclusion ofcurrent issues such as climate change, resource recovery and disaster risk management. The program has been reviewed to equip students with a set of knowledge and skills which will enable them to solve a wide-range of environmental challenges. The waste management, process emissions, contaminated land and water and waste disposal. The programme also addresses energy and resource recovery from waste materials. This was done following demand for professional career opportunities in the country' growing environmental problems as the result of expansion in economic activities and their related activities. In order to attain sustainable economic development, all the consequences of the developmental project need to be mitigated, using Best Practices. Skills that need to be imparted to students include research methods, wastewater treatment design, environmental chemistry, environmental biotechnology, Soil pollution, solid waste management and resource recovery, design of air pollution control systems, hazardous waste management and minimization and soft skills. The needs were derived from a Tracer study which was conducted in March 2017.

General Minimum Entrance Requirements
A candidate shall be deemed eligible for consideration for admission to a Postgraduate – degree Programme of Ardhi University if the candidate has obtained: At least a Second-Class Lower Division B.Sc. Environmental Engineering, B.Sc. Environmental Science and Management, BSc Municipal and Industrial Services engineering or any other related B.Sc. Engineering/Science from a recognized universities and institutions of higher learning.
OR
Postgraduate Diploma in Environmental Engineering, or environmental related disciplines; or any other related Postgraduate Diploma in Engineering/Science from recognized universities and institutions of higher learning.
The Programme status is full time with a duration of 1.5years.
