The School of Environmental Science and Technology (SEST) is one of the four Schools of Ardhi University. SEST came into being after the transformation of the University College of Lands and Architectural Studies (UCLAS), which was a constituent college of the University of Dar es Salaam to Ardhi University (ARU) in 2007. The transformation from UCLAS to ARU lead to the restructuring of the UCLAS into a full-fledged University (ARU). UCLAS was composed of two academic faculties, the Faculty of Lands and Environmental Engineering (FLEE) and the Faculty of Architecture and Planning (FAP). FLEE comprised of departments of Environmental Engineering (EE), Land Management and Valuation (LMV) and Land Surveying (LS). The Faculty used to offer three undergraduate degree programmes whereby each department hosted one Programme bearing the name of the department as follow: Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering (BSc.EE), Bachelor of Science in Land Surveying (B.Sc. LS) and Bachelor of Science in Land Management and Valuation (BSc.LMV). Therefore, the Environmental engineering Programme was offered in the department of Environmental Engineering.
After the transformation from UCLAS to ARU, the School of Environmental Science and Technology (SEST) was formed to host the department of Environmental Engineering. Currently the school has two departments; the old Environmental Engineering department (EE) and department of Environmental Science and Management (ESM). Through the two departments, the school offers four undergraduate programmes which are; BSc.in Environmental Engineering (BSc.EE) and BSc.in Municipal and Industrial Services Engineering (BSc.MISE), hosted in the department of Environmental Engineering. The other programmes are BSc.in Environmental Science and Management (BSc.ESM) and BSc.in Environmental Laboratory Science and Technology (BSc.ELST), hosted in the department of Environmental Science and Technology. The School also runs postgraduate programmes namely;Master of science in Environmental Technology and Management (MSc.ETM), Master of Disaster Risk Management (M.DRM), Master of Science in Disaster Risk Management (MSc.DRM). In addition, the School offers Doctor of Philosophy Degree programmes by Research in the fields of environment and Disasters. More specifically,the Doctor of Philosophy Degree programmes offered include: Doctor of philosophy in Environmental Engineering (PhD EE), doctor of philosophy in Environmental Technology and Management (PhD ETM), doctor of philosophy in Environmental Science and Management (PhD ESM), doctor of philosophy in Disaster Management (PhD DM) and doctor of philosophy in Laboratory Science and Technology (PhD LST). The school is growing steadily in terms of students’ enrollment, number of academic staffs and the number undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
